You’ve just received an invite to a party, and it says two words that spark curiosity (and maybe a little confusion): Silent Disco.
If you’ve never been to one before, you might be wondering what the rules are. Do you have to stay quiet? Is it rude to take the headphones off? How do you order a drink?
Don't worry—silent discos are actually more social and more of a vibe than traditional loud parties. But, like any event, there are a few "unspoken rules" that make the night better for everyone.
Here is your guide to silent disco etiquette, ensuring you are the life of the (quiet) party.
1. The "Necklace" Rule (How to Talk)
At a normal club, if you want to talk to someone, you have to lean in and scream into their ear. At a silent disco, we have a better way.
The Rule: If you want to chat, simply slide your headphones down around your neck or you could do one side off to still hear the music while mingling.
This is the universal signal for "I’m taking a break and ready to talk." Because there are no loud speakers blasting in the room, you can have a conversation at a normal, comfortable volume. It is polite, it saves your voice, and it makes socializing incredibly easy.
2. Don’t Be a "Channel Hog"
Your SE2 Silent Disco headphones come equipped with a switch that lets you toggle between 3 different channels (usually Red, Green, and Blue).
The Rule: Don't stick to just one color all night - expand a little!
Part of the fun is seeing the room react. If you see everyone around you suddenly switching to Green and screaming "Yeaaah!", switch over and see what you are missing! The best guests are the ones who explore all the music genres the host has prepared.
3. Sing Like Nobody Can Hear You (Because They Can't)
One of the best parts of a silent disco is the sound of the crowd. When you have your headphones on, you feel like you are in your own world.
The Rule: It is 100% okay to sing out loud.
In fact, it is encouraged! There is nothing better than taking your headphones off for a second and hearing 50 people singing the chorus to "Mr. Brightside". Don't be shy—belt it out!
4. Respect the "Vibe Check"
The LED lights on the headphones are a dead giveaway. They show everyone exactly what you are listening to.
The Rule: Use the lights to find your tribe.
If you are listening to the Blue channel (say, 2000's Hits) and you see a group of people across the room also flashing Blue, go dance with them! It’s an instant icebreaker. The colors are there to help you connect with people enjoying the same beat.
5. Careful with the Gear
Remember, you're either attending an SE2 Silent Disco public event OR the host has rented this equipment from SE2 Silent Disco, and they are responsible for keeping it safe to get their security deposit back.
The Rule: Treat the headphones like they are your own.
- Don't throw them.
- Don't spill your drink on them.
- If you are going to the bathroom or stepping outside for a smoke and they have your ID from check-in, you can take your headphones with you. If they don't have your ID, just leave the headphones with a friend or at the designated drop-off table.
6. The "Range" Reality Check
Our headphones have an incredible range (up to 100 yards!), which means you can dance on the patio, in the hallway, or even in the parking lot.
The Rule: But please, don't leave the venue for the night with them.
If you walk too far, the static will kick in. And more importantly, if you accidentally wear them home (the "accidental souvenir"), you cause a huge headache for your host who has to recount the inventory.
7. The Final Hand-In
At the end of the night, there is one golden rule that trumps them all.
The Rule: Just hand them back.
When the lights come on, help your host out by bringing your headphones back to the collection area. The sooner they get all the gear back, the sooner they can relax. (And remember, SE2 requires all gear returned to process that deposit refund!)
